The Best Credit Card in Malaysia - Is There Really One?

Latest Update December 2013 - OCBC Titanium MasterCard has been revamped once again and now offer unlimited 1% cash back FOR ALL TREANSACTIONS. And it is now FREE FOR LIFE with minimum annual income requirement of RM24K only.

It is human nature to want the best in everything even when it is free. I noticed that many people always asked - what is the best credit card? Well the answer can only be answered by yourself, taking into consideration on how and where you spend your money. For me, before the imposition of government service tax of RM50 per principal card, the answer was simple - any card that gives free annual fees is considered best. Now I have to consider GST and weigh it against the credit card benefits but the most important thing to me is still free annual fees and at the very least auto annual fee waiver with condition(s).

This post, I will try to list out the benefit of credit cards free ( auto waiver ) annual fees that I know off and hope that it can help you decide what card is best for you.

CIMB Credit Cards Promotion 2012

(An article by:

First the bad news, the best CIMB credit card promotion in 2011 and 2010 is no longer being offered by CIMB, and everyone of you would know what I mean, it's the CIMB 0% Balance Transfer Plan. And the second best CIMB Credit Card promotion, 0% 10 Months Installment Plan for Hospital, Insurance and Education Bills is also no longer available. So, is there any point in us keeping the CIMB Credit Cards? Well, let's check out the benefits of CIMB Credit Cards for this year.

CIMB have been slow to update their credit card promotions back in January 2012, and with all the festive seasons behind us, the good news is that CIMB people are back to work and have been updating their website almost weekly.

The FREE cup of coffee at Dome with either CIMB Premier Credit Cards, i.e. World MasterCard or Visa Infinite, has been extended to end of 2012 :) Last year, I could order a single scone and I'll get a FREE cup of coffee while waiting for the girls to shop at the malls.

0% Installment Plan with Credit Card IS A Trap.

(Article by My Credit Cards: )

I have mentioned several times in my past articles that 0% Installment Plans termed as Easy Payment Plan (EPP) or Installment Payment Plan (IPP) are well laid traps by banks to entice a credit card holder to spend beyond their means. You may ask, how can that be? Isn't 0% Interest Good for us? The answer is Yes and No.

IF you have the cash in hand, then YES, 0% Installment Plans are great as it can earn us some pocket money. Click here to read my articles Earn Pocket With Credit Cards and UOB Credit Card Installment Plan where I have showed how one can earn some pocket money with cash on hand prior to a purchase.

IF you don't have the cash in hand prior to signing up for a 0% Installment Plan, the the answer is a NO. I have published an article last year on Valentine's Day titled Malaysia Credit Card Annual Income and Credit Limit where under the topic of Credit Limit I gave two scenarios on how 0% Installment Plans can make a person end up in the shit hole. Since Valentine's Day is just around the corner, I thought I revisit the post and remind those who may be spending beyond their means hoping to find happiness.

Below is part of what was written in my article Malaysia Credit Card Annual Income and Credit Limit:

My New Citibank Platinum and Citibank Credit Card Promotion 2012

(Article by My Credit Cards: )

In my article titled My Credit Card 2012 - Bye Bye Standard Chartered Bank Visa Infinite (click here to read it), I posted a photo My 18 Credit Cards as of 1st January 2012. Since then I have surrendered the SCB VI. And in my article titled RM1,000,000 Unsecured Credit posted at Ringgit Wise Fool (click here to read it), I also mentioned that I will be terminating some of my other credit cards that do not benefit me.

Well, the Citibank Platinum Visa is a pretty good card. It offers Travel Medical Insurance on top of Standard Travel Insurance and earn the cardholder 5X reward points at selected departmental stores and merchants. Citibank credit cards are also entitled to many promotions at participating merchants.

Below is a photo I posted in my article comparing the Citibank PremierMiles versus the Citibank Platinum back in 28 April 2011.

However, I seldom use my Citibank Platinum Credit Card. So far only used it last year at TGV, Coffee Bean and Sakae Sushi (one time only) to enjoy discount with it. So last Tuesday night ( 17 January 2011), I called Citibank Customer Service to terminate my Citibank Platinum Credit Card.

Banks Default Value for Credit Card SMS Alert

(Article by My Credit Cards: )

In my article Credit Card Fraudulent Charges - SMS notification from 1st January 2012 posted back in April 2011, I mentioned:

Bank Negara Malaysia have on 18th March 2011 announced that effective from 1 January 2012, card issuers are to inform cardholders via sms when transactions are made. Below is part of the announcement where in the same press release, BNM informed that one has to earn minimum RM24K per annum to be eligible for a credit card.

In the effort to further enhance credit card security and to promote public confidence in the usage of credit cards as a safe payment instrument, effective 1 January 2012, transaction alerts via Short Messaging Service (SMS) will be implemented by card issuers for their cardholders after transactions are performed.  This will be followed by the implementation of the Personal Identification Number (PIN) verification for all card transactions from 1 January 2015 onwards.

1st January has come and gone and we expect to receive SMS Notification when our credit cards are used for any transactions; but, that is not the case. We are now in mid January 2012 and I have yet to receive a single sms from OCBC even tho I have use my OCBC Titanium MasterCard several times to pump petrol on top of the auto debit for my telco and Unifi bills.

So far I have received SMS from the following banks for my transactions in the following format:
