Malaysia Premier Credit Cards - Which Is Best For You?

(Article by My Credit Cards: http://creditcardsmalaysia.blogspot.com/ If you are reading this article elsewhere, beware that  site is a fake as they are copying my contents without my permission! )

UPDATE 18 February 2012 - click here to read my updated and revised post on Premier Credit Cards at my new blog named GenX GenY GenZ http://generationsxyz.blogspot.com where I have made some revisions and updated the article below.

*******************************************************

This is my third and final post on my series of different categories of credit cards in Malaysia.

The first article in my series of different categories was on Entry Level cards where the annual income requirements are RM30,000 or less and included Gold cards. In this said article I mentioned what I thought was the worst credit card in Malaysia as far as returns are concerned.
Click here to read my article Entry Level Credit Cards - Which Is The Best For You?

The second article covered Platinum credit cards, the annual income requirement for a Platinum credit card nowadays starts at RM36K! This figure is even less than the annual income requirement for Gold credit cards when it was first introduced in Malaysia.
Click here to read my article Malaysia Platinum Credit Cards - Which Is The Best For You?

And today's post shall be about Premium/Premier Credit Cards. Generally, premier credit cards are cards that are ranked higher than Platinum Credit Cards. For Visa's case, the Visa Infinite is technically ranked higher than a Visa Signature. However for World MasterCard case, some banks do issue so called Preferred or Premier World MasterCard where the minimum income requirement is less than  RM100K; and therefore, should be ranked similar to Visa Signature as far as I am concerned.

And once again, for the fun of it, I shall rank the available Premier Credit Cards in Malaysia for this posting. The ranking method I decided to adopt is solely based on minimum Credit Limit for a particular Premier Credit Card. However, you must note that my ranking is of no value and a person having a lower ranked card by me DOES NOT mean his credit limit is lower compared to another person having a credit card ranked as prestigious card by me. For example, I have ranked the Citibank PremierMiles Visa Signature as a Lower Ranked Premier Card but a particular card holder may have credit limit of up to RM450K which is much much higher than the minimum credit limit of RM200K for RHB Visa Infinite. Not only that, a person having the CIMB Platinum Enrich MasterCard that I mentioned in my Platinum Card category may also have credit limit higher than a  person carrying CIMB World MasterCard. And a person having a RHB TESCO card can have credit limit up to RM100K which beats the many Premier Credit Cards minimum credit limit.

From my propriety research (wonder if HLB's propriety research is of same standard as mine when they mentioned about it for their HLB Fortune Card) I have prepared a table of various Premier Cards available as of November 2011. Well, there may be other so called premier cards out there but I don't think their benefits will beat the cards that I have mentioned in my table.

What I realised that unlike me, many people having Premier credit cards are into Enrich miles. And if I do not mention something on Enrich miles redemption here, then it would be unproductive for readers who are seeking for Premier credit cards to read this article. So I have to go "study" about Enrich Miles redemption of various cards for the sake of you guys. I hope the info provided in the table below makes it simpler for those of you who are seeking a Premier Credit Card with Enrich Miles.

Please note that the summary of my propriety research may not be accurate since I don't have the  budget to employ a team of experts on credit cards to do proper evaluation :(  Anyway, www.creditcardsmalaysia.blogspot.com proudly present to you the Malaysia Premier Credit Cards Annual Income Requirement, Annual Fee, Credit Limit and Benefits:

Malaysia Premier Credit Cards By http://creditcardsmalaysia.blogspot.com

I would appreciate that if any of you use the above info for your own articles or website without you doing any research of your own, please quote that you have referred to my blog www.creditcardsmalaysia.blogspot.com and give it due recognition. I am so damn pissed of that one site (can't even spell customer correctly) copied my entire post on Maybank Visa Infinite ( including my comic character  Mr. CL Tan pictures!??? ). Go google Maybank Visa Infinite and you shall see what I mean or click here to read my earlier post.

Coming back to the purpose of this article.

VISA SIGNATURE

Currently there are four Visa Signature credit cards issued in Malaysia and I have actually written articles on Citibank PremierMiles, Hong Leong Bank (Ex-EON) Visa Signature and HSBC Visa Signature.

HSBC Visa Signature - click here to read my article. Well, I got this card because HSBC "upgraded" all their previous Platinum cardholders to this card. In addition to Travel Insurance, this card also provides Medical Insurance up to RM75K for 60 days and even up to 30 days follow up medical treatment here with terms and conditions of course. I have stated in the above table that the minimum credit limit for HSBC VS is less than RM20K, this does not mean anything because most people having this card and earn above RM100K p.a. would  have a higher credit limit than this. However, here's a shocker, don't be surprise that a person holding the HSBC Visa Signature has a credit limit of less than RM10K because the minimum credit limit for this card is RM5K! The reason for a person having a HSBC VS with such a low credit limit is due to the fact HSBC upgraded all their previous plat cards holders prior to March 2011 to the VS. And the last few years many banks have downgraded their requirements for one to qualify for a Plat card. When calling HSBC Toll Free line and if you want to speak to a Malaysian on the other end, press 2 for BM (tip from a fellow LYN member). Generally I find HSBC CS to be helpful and courteous.

Citibank PremierMiles - click here to read my article on it. The only reason I have ranked this card as a lower ranking premier card is because of the low minimum credit limit. However, I must stress that the Citibank PremierMiles Visa Signature standard card features are indeed very good especially for frequent travelers. It has very good travel insurance with 30 days PA coverage up to RM300K and even provide overseas medical insurance up to RM50K. This card also allows the cardholder to enter LCCT and KLIA Plaza Premium Lounge for a combined 12 times per year and with 2 complimentary passes to airport lounge worldwide with the Priority Pass Membership.

One major difference between Citibank PremierMiles compared to other cards is that it allows you to convert PremierMiles earned to 70 airline partners' miles.

Now, Citibank have been promoting this PremierMiles card to their existing Platinum cardholders. My advise is that you if you are not a frequent traveler, do take note that you are earning Airmiles and not rewards points that you can redeem for cash vouchers or other stuff. I don't want you to find yourself in a situation that after one year you may want to cancel the card and may have to burn the airmiles you have earned from your transactions.

HLB (Ex-Eon Bank) Visa Signature - click here to read my article on it. The minimum credit limit for this card is RM40K. This card grants you UNLIMITED access to LCCT and KLIA Plaza Premium Lounge until end of 2011. It would be great if HLB would continue this benefit to their cardholders next year. It comes with Priority Pass Membership too with 3 times free entries. The annual fee is waived automatically with RM30K spending. For overseas spending you'll earn 2X reward points, PLUS additional 1% cash back subjected that you spend minimum RM10K overseas but capped at RM500. However, I have found their overseas admin fee to be much higher compared to my Maybank cards when it was still under EON Bank. Click here to read my article Overseas Transactions. This card also provides Medical Insurance on top of Travel insurance.

Highlights of HLB Visa Signature:
1.5 Bonus Points for every RM1 local spending and 2 Bonus Points for overseas
7000 Bonus Points = 1000 Enrich Miles
Overseas Medical up to RM85K up to 60 days, PA up to RM150K.

Now, let me tell you, the helpfulness of EON Bank (now HLB) Toll Free Visa Signature Customer Service representatives varies but there are two individuals who stand out and are ever ready to assist and do call me back if necessary. Their names are Brandon and Azi (Cik), I hope HLB Management read this and promote both of them.

CIMB Visa Signature. This card minimum credit limit is RM50K and that is the only reason why it falls into my Mid Ranked Premier Credit Cards. As far as standard card features are concerned, it loses out to the other 3 Visa Signature mentioned above. I have nothing much to write about this card features but once again I will just repeat that CIMB have pretty good promotions such as 0% Balance Transfer, 0% Installment Plans for Hospital, insurance and Education Bills, 20% discount for liquor at Eraman Duty Free and discount at many outlets and restaurants. Click here to see some of CIMB promotions.

As for CIMB Customer Service, I find all their representatives to be friendly and helpful.

PREMIER CREDIT CARDS THAT ARE ISSUED WITH PREMIER or PRIORITY BANKING.

Standard Chartered Visa Infinite and HSBC Premier World MasterCard are issued with Priority/Premier Banking but I don't recognized them as a Higher Ranked Premier Credit Card. I know some of you may say that I am crazy (well, I am as far as my credit cards collection is concerned, hahaha) because to be eligible for these cards, one needs to have minimum RM250K AUM with the bank.

To be fair to the other banks, the SCB Visa Infinite and HSBC Premier World MasterCard should be categorized in the Platinum series; because, if you have a Premier/Priority/Privilege Banking account with other banks, you will also be issued pre-approved Alliance Platinum, Citibank Platinum, HLB Platinum and RHB Platinum credit cards with similar minimum credit limits. I can go even further by arguing that these two so called Premier cards should be ranked lower than UOB Preferred Platinum with the words Privilege Banking embossed onto the card since you need more than RM250K AUM in UOB to qualify for their Privilege Banking status.

You have to agree with me that the standard feature of HSBC World MasterCard (not talking about banking facilities but purely on CC benefits) is lacking far behind compared to Citibank PremierMiles. You can't even enter into KLIA Plaza Premium Lounge with the HSBC WMC. And worst still, HSBC Premier World MasterCard holders do not have a Toll Free customer service number to call unlike for the HSBC Visa Signature!

On the other hand, SCB VI is pretty good compared to HSBC WMC since it comes with  Unlimited Priority Pass entries and 5X Choice Points for overseas spending. Peasant, a reader of this blog :)   did highlight in his comment that with 14,000 choice points to redeem RM50 cash back, it is equivalent to 1.78% cash back, which is actually pretty good. So if you are a frequent traveler, than I would say that SCB Visa Infinite is a very good card; but, if you don't go overseas or do online overseas transactions, you won't benefit much from this card (unless you do patronize the many restaurant and outlets that give discount with SCB credit cards). Click here to read my short article on the Standard Chartered Bank Visa Infinite - The Ultimate Airport Lounge Credit Card. I'm pleased to inform that SCB Toll Free Priority Customer Service is very helpful and courteous too.

HIGHER RANKING PREMIER CREDIT CARDS
(Article by My Credit Cards: http://creditcardsmalaysia.blogspot.com/ If you are reading this article elsewhere, beware that  site is a fake as they are copying my contents without my permission! )

CIMB WORLD MASTERCARD and VISA INFINITE. Best you get both these cards since it is FREE FOR LIFE without conditions. The CIMB WMC earns you points where as the CIMB Visa Infinite is a pure cash back card and both card earns you double for overseas transactions. Each card has its own benefits, for example, the WMC gives complimentary golf geen fees whereas the Visa Infinite gives your Free 1 for 1 movie ticket at GSC.

Like I mentioned for CIMB Visa Signature case above, CIMB WMC and VI standard features are nothing great but CIMB promotions are good. The minimum credit limit for these cards is combined at RM100K. For those of you wanting to have 6 figures credit limit but not earning RM200K per year, you can now have the CIMB WMC or VI by depositing RM200K with CIMB Preferred Banking. And if CIMB extend their 0% Balance Transfer Plan again next year, you'll be getting 0%  interest unsecured loan again :)

The CIMB WMC together with VI did manage to obtained the 5th spot in my Top Ten Credit Cards in Malaysia 2011 which I did in May - click here to read it. But with Maybank Visa Infinite being introduced in October 2011, I have a strong feeling it will drop in ranking if CIMB do not enhance the card standard benefits before I do my Top 10 for 2012. As for Customer Service, as I mentioned earlier, CIMB CS is pretty good and helpful.

Maybank World MasterCard. This card comes in 2 versions, i.e. with or without golden lounge access  where the annual fees are RM1.5K and RM1K respectively. There is no auto waiver of annual fees but you can always request (if you spend more than RM100K with it, then good chance of the annual fee being waived). This card only benefits frequent traveler with MA and just like the Citibank PremierMiles, it does not earn you Treats Points but Treats Airmiles. So if you fly with Malaysia Airlines frequently and want to covert your Treats Airmiles to Enrich miles, then this card is worth considering.

Maybank Visa Infinite. This is the latest credit card in the market and was launched in October 2011. This card is excellent for overseas because you earn 5X Treats Points for every RM1 overseas spending. And when comparing to Maybank World MasterCard Enrich redemption, RM for RM spent, the Maybank Visa Infinite with auto annual fee waiver with RM50K spending is very competitive. This card also allows you 5 complimentary visits to airport lounges worldwide with the Priority Pass Membership where as the MBB WMC does not issue you the Priority Pass card.  Click here to read my article titled Maybank Visa Infinite - The Best Credit Card for Overseas and click here to read the follow up post and view actual photos in my article titled Maybank Visa Infinite -  'The' Card To Go Around The World With.

Initially when I applied for the Visa Infinite, I was told that the minimum credit limit is RM70K for both MBB WMC and VI. That is why my above table states so. BUT, yesterday when I called MBB CS to inquire on a supp card for my wife, I reconfirm again with the CS on the minimum credit limit and was surprised to be told that many MBB WMC and VI cardholders have credit limit of RM50K only (same as CIMB Visa Signature minimum CL). Therefore; the minimum credit limit for both MBB WMC and VI should be read as RM50K or more in my table and not RM70K (too lazy to change the table and for those who don't read this, they will be misinformed, haha).  Maybank CS has improved tremendously in the last two years; and, I must say I have very happy with both the Platinum and Visa Infinite MBB Toll Free Customer Service representatives ( I believe the improvement is because they have received training from previous AMEX CS which is now part of MBB group).

THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS CREDIT CARD IN MALAYSIA

Two credit cards share this prestigious award bestowed by www.creditcardsmalaysia.blogspot.com because they are by invitation only and you have to be filthy rich. The cards in this category are the RHB Visa Infinite and CIMB Enrich World MasterCard.  I wonder if RHB and CIMB will mention this special award by me when they advertise their cards, hmm...

RHB Visa Infinite - now in order to qualify for this card, you must have net worth no less than USD1million. Being a million-ringgit-aire does not qualify you for this card. I just posted my article titled Malaysia 39,000 Millionaires at Ringgit Wise Fool - click here to read it.  So, if the report is correct, only maximum 39,000 Malaysians can qualify for this card. You can observe for yourself in the above table that this card has not much benefits and only the filthy rich whom are not bothered with cash back or reward points will hold this card. As such, the RHB Visa Infinite truly deserves the titled of The Most Prestigious Credit Card in Malaysia. I must add, RHB Visa Infinite Travel Insurance covers the cardholders up to  RM3.6M and Medical up to RM95K for up to 60 days - click here to RHB site to read more on the insurance policy. I got no idea on RHB VI Customer Service but I can tell you their Premier Banking CS is very good because they will go all out to attend to my matters by checking with other departments and then call me back.

Another card that deserve to be awarded the titled of being The Most Prestigious Credit Card in Malaysia is CIMB Enrich World MasterCard. In order to get the annual fee waived, one has to spend RM500K with it! If this is really the case, better go change to MBB Visa Infinite where the annual fee is waived with RM50K spending only. Here are some of the benefits stated in CIMB website:

additional ticket when you fly First Class or Business Class with Malaysia Airlines
2X Enrich Miles for overseas spending - Every RM4 you spend on overseas retail transcations will earn you 2 Enrich Miles. You simply earn more when you travel!

But now with CIMB Enrich WORLD MasterCard, you’ll earn 1.5 Enrich miles for every RM6 spent for all retail purchases.
2 Exclusive Golden Lounge vouchers for access to Malaysia Airlines Golden Lounge - Enjoy up to 2 complimentary access to the Malaysia Airlines Golden Lounge in and outside Malaysia.
Extra Miles for Malaysia Airlines Online Booking - On every RM1 spent on Malaysia Airlines Online Booking transactionvia www.malaysiaairlines.com will earn you 1 Enrich Mile.

AND THE MOST EXCLUSIVE CREDIT CARD IN MALAYSIA  ....

Surprise, surprise, The Most Exclusive Credit Card in Malaysia is not a Premier card. This card is so exclusive that there is no way I can obtain it (well, if SCB is generous enough to issue this card to me, I'm sure all my articles from then on shall be favoring SCB, hahahaha). Only a limited selected smart people who applied for it when it was launched  has it. Stan Chart has stopped issuing this two in one credit cum debit card to the general public. Even if you are a millionaire, you can't have this card (unless SCB decides to relaunch this card or you're a VVVIP). The main feature of this card is that it earns the cardholder cash back up to maximum RM600/year for transaction(s) on Fridays. Now, take note, I said per year not per month, you can actually do a single transaction for RM12,000 on a Friday and you will earn cash back of RM600; but after that you can keep the card in the drawer until the card's anniversary again, haha.

CONCLUSION

Having a premier credit card does not necessarily mean that the card's standard benefits will gain you more in returns compared to a Platinum Card or even an Entry Level credit card. For example, if  you only need a card to pump petrol at BHP, the best credit card to have is the UOB One Card Classic Visa credit card. Well actually, all the premier cards mentioned above DO NOT earn you anything for pumping petrol with it! If you want a card for KLIA Plaza Premium Lounge only, Platinum credit cards from Alliance, AMEX and SCB will do the job. And if you only want a card for utilities spending of less than RM1,000, the OCBC Titanium MasterCard is the best. And, a card holder having a Premier Credit Card may even have a lower credit limit compared to another guy carrying a Gold credit card.

On the other hand, if you are into Enrich Points, airport lounges and travel frequently overseas, Premier credit cards do benefit you more than Platinum Cards. As far as I am concerned, the best card for overseas right now is the Maybank Visa Infinite where one can earn 5X Treats Points with every Ringgit spent overseas. The best card for airport lounge is no doubt the Standard Chartered Bank Visa Infinite with UNLIMITED complimentary access. And if you buy liquor at Eraman Duty Free, the best cards are from CIMB. You want high Travel Insurance coverage, then RHB Visa Infinite is the card to get.

When one chooses the best credit card(s) to own, one has to consider where he spends his money, what he intends to gain from the credit card (e.g. cash back, cash vouchers, Enrich miles, airport lounge access, discount, overseas transactions and etc) and he also must plan and know what card to use for his transactions in order to optimize the returns since different cards have different benefits. I hope you can find the best credit card(s) for yourself from reading my Premier, Platinum and Entry Level credit cards articles :)

With the launching of the  Maybank Visa Infinite, I am sure next year there will be some changes to my Top 10 Credit Cards in Malaysia scheduled to be released in May 2012.

So, what is the physical difference between Premier, Platinum, Titanium, Gold and other credit cards? Nothing, yes nothing, since they are all made from cheap plastic, hahaha. So, no matter what or how many credit cards you carry, you are just having cheap plastic cards (like me). And if you think by having a cheap plastic premier card like CIMB World MasterCard gives you "status" in society, then you are just kidding yourself and it is only you (and me included lah)  "shiok sendiri", more hahahaha. You don't agree? I tell you why I am right. The "jaga kereta" boy don't accept cards, but if you give me a ringgit, he'll call you boss. You think the girls and china-peks would be more impressed with a person having a MA logo CIMB Enrich WMC with credit limit of RM388K or a person with a hand carry bag full of cash? A guy paying a bill with a credit card makes no difference to the girls or china-peks (to them all cards are the same cheap plastic and wouldn't know how to differentiate between VI or Plat); but, the moment the girls see a guy with bundles of RM100 notes in his bag, they will swarm over him like bees as if he has touched the hornet's nest. To the china-peks (salesmen too), they'll think, hey, this guy with the cash is rich and can do business with. And most of the guys you see active in KL nightlife has credit cards and don't be surprised that most of them have monthly outstanding balances. Talking about girls, credit cards and cash; now it's no longer about the 5Cs but 5Bs - click here to read my article Bs Girls Power at Ringgit Wise Fool.

Having said the above, there is one card which distinguishes itself from other credit cards. This card is not made from plastic but real titanium. This card is no other than the Elite American Express Black Centurion Charge Card; and you may call it a "status" card since it is truly exclusive, prestigious, made from titanium and by invitation only. This card truly shows a person has attained "the epitome of success" (a quote by Peasant). Come to think of it, most of the Premier cards are black too, I guess you can say that these black in color Premier credit cards are fakes or wannabes Amex Black Card :)

  1. GenX, luckily you remembered to quote me when you wrote "epitome of success" hehehehehe.

On another note, since www.costumersolutions.com is stealing your posts, why not insert your blog URL every now and then in the middle of your posts? That way you get free advertisement for your blog from there haha.

  2. Hi GenX,

    I enjoyed reading this article.

Just a note though on the HSBC Premier WMC, the AUM requirement as per HSBC Malaysia website is RM200k and not RM250k.

    Thank you.

  3. Explorer II, you're right. Thanks for highlighting the over sight.

  4. Peasant, well, I did said I will mentioned which card symbolizes "epitome of success", haha.

Well, I did mention my website and inserted links to my site everywhere in the article, yah, great minds think alike, hehe

  5. Hye GenX, i really love to read your articles, despite your frustration for the fake website which stole your posts.

Anyway, i'm so new with credit card, any i have some confusion, but can i request for you to post 1 article about charge card, how it works in malaysia, and how to get it, since some of the card also offering the same privileges like other premier credit cards.

    thanks, cheers.. :)

  6. Hi shawn, thanks for reading my articles and hope it will benefit you in some ways.

As for charge card, well there is really nothing much to write about it. I can just post it here instead of writing an article.

    1. For charge card, you apply same method as credit cards. If you want AMEX, go to their website to download application form or call AMEX to fax you the form or go to any MBB branches.

    2. Unlike credit cards you are to settle your bills in full prior to the Due Date unlike credit cards where you can have outstanding balances (and are imposed interest charges).

    3. Unlike credit cards, charge card "credit limit" is based on your spending pattern and of course your ability to make payment for your transactions.

that all is there to know, hahaha.

Prior to Maybankard 2 Amex, my main card was my Amex Gold Charge card where I earn 3X points with Turbo points where I can get equivalent of 1.5% cash back (you go to enroll for it and only worthwhile if you spend RM20K above, I did read about it in this blog). But, now with MBB 2 AMEX 5X Treats Points, the card is kept in the drawer :(

  7. Dear Genx, after reading your eagerly awaited post on premier credit cards, it is disappointing to know that there is no really prestigious credit card in Malaysia. The two that topped your list were there because they are hard to get, their benefits are not impressive. Unlike the recently launched HSBC Visa Infinite in Singapore:

"..... getting to the airport itself will be a breeze, with the Infinite's unlimited, complimentary one-way limousine transfer to your terminal. Cardholders will also gain unlimited access to the JetQuay Terminal, where you'll enjoy personalised check-in services and a buggy to ferry them to the main airport.

In addition, both the Main as well as the Supplementary cardholder can access over 600 VIP airport lounges worldwide. For a seamless traveling experience, cardholders will also enjoy expedited immigration clearance at 40 airports in major cities such as Bangkok, Beijing, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Taipei and Tokyo.

For the record, the minimum annual income required for the Visa Infinite's by-invitation only membership is S$250,000."

But then, on second thoughts, it is perhaps better not to have such a card here. Surely I won't qualify and I would be green with envy for those who get it. Hahaha.

  8. ST's Blog, for Malaysian's earning SGD250,000, they don't need the HSBC Visa Infinite because they would have their own drivers, limousines, bodyguards and free access to airport lounges since they fly first class :)

  9. GenX,

I love reading your articles as I am a big fan of Credit cards privileges too.One of the areas that you missed out when you measure these cards are the 1 for 1 Dining Promotions.

CIMB Infinite and WMC has a huge participating list of hotel restaurants. While Amex Platinum ties up with Shangri-la. MBB Visa infinite offers complimentary SPG membership which itself is worth RM690 already!

  10. Hi GenX, nice articles you have over here. I really enjoy reading it as I am a fan of credit cards too. I was wondering if the AMEX Platinum Charge card is consider a primier card as it has the highest annual fee and the holder of the card is allocate a personal assistant by the AMEX to take care of the holder need?

    ReplyDelete
  11. ykwc42002, AMEX plat charge card is definitely a "Premier" card as far as I am concerned, because cheapskates like me won't pay the annual fee, haha.

Another thing, no way a Credit Card can be more prestigious than a Charge Card. A person who works for the banks (paying interest on his Outstanding Balances and got no cash) with his Premier Credit Cards is deemed to be "poorer" that a guy with a Standard AMEX Charge Card who pays up all his bills on time, hahahaha.

And thanks for reading my articles :)
